Vanesa screamed.
Being stranded in a cabin with her brother, a dog, kids who couldn’t stop fighting, and an incompetent ski instructor was already a worst-case scenario. With a ghost and a power outage added to the equation, Vanesa knew enough math to calculate that the probability for disaster was high.
Maybe with a phone she could’ve made the best out of this situation. She could have taken a video of Bryce freaking out—he was now screaming, too—and the rest of the kids panicking downstairs. That kind of thing would go viral in a matter of minutes. But now, without a phone, the chance of becoming a celebrity for a funny video was out the window. Never mind calling her parents back.
“Stay here for a second,” Bryce said when he recovered. “I’m going to make sure the other babies are okay.”
“Babies?” Vanesa repeated in the darkness of the playroom. Had she missed another whole group of kids, of babies? Then realization fell on her. “Wait, what?” Did that make her a baby, too? She fumed.
Bryce didn’t reply. At the sound of his footsteps heading toward the stairs, Vanesa exclaimed, “I don’t want to stay on this floor so close to the attic!” She tried to follow him, but she could hardly see a couple of steps ahead. The sunlight was quickly disappearing as the storm picked up.
Bryce said anxiously, “But we need to find the radio or the walkie-talkie. They have to be up here. Someone has to search while there’s a little bit of light left. Rocky will stay here to protect you.”
Vanesa flinched. She didn’t want to be anywhere close to Rocky—or the ghost in the attic. But Bryce was right about finding a way to communicate with the lodge. Even though she didn’t like the dog, she felt a little better in his presence.
“I promise I’ll be back as soon as possible,” Bryce said, and left.
Vanesa heard footsteps again as he slowly went down the stairs. She pressed her forehead against the cold window and felt the strength of the wind. What if it broke the glass? The thought made her heart gallop, so she stepped back a little and looked outside.
There was a glow, as if the fog and the snow were playing tag with a light that shone through the swirling flakes. Vanesa tried to focus her eyes and saw the outline of the main lodge. Lights were on in the windows there.
They still had electricity!
Mami and Papi must think she and Hunter were having the time of their lives. They’d have no idea the power had gone out in the kids’ lodge. If only she could let them know!
The wind seemed to change direction because suddenly, she caught a glimpse of the signpost that led to the slopes and its glowing light on top. It stood between the lodges like a lighthouse. On the ground, there was a shadow. It could either be an animal, crouching against the pole to protect itself from the elements, or
